In Rugby USA, volume III, Spring 1968, Heinz W Lenz (Assistant Professor and Rugby Coach) wrote "The Midshipmen have shown tremendous interest in Rugby. We were able to play approximately six matches against outside organizations beginning four years ago. However, the policy of the USNA Athletic Association is to rule out competition for any athletic activities carried out on a club basis because it is felt that is is not desirable to carry out negotiations with students. .... Since there are no other varsity rugby programs [in the East] to schedule we are not in a position to play outside competition. We have rugby on the intramural level. Each of the six battalions has a team. In the spring these teams play each other in round robin competition. Thus we have approximately 270 enthusiastic rugby players. The fall of this academic year [which would be fall 1967] we were challenged by a British Ship, HMS Lynx, to a match. We practiced with the men who not engaged in other activities and managed to win 15-3"
