A bit of the story on St. Andrews. A number of us had started going out for some local golf while on tour on one of our off days from rugby. On this tour, while billeted at a Royal Navy base outside Edinburgh, one of our Scotland matches was actually played on a pitch yards from the golf course. A retired Royal Navy commander who was a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Course of St. Andrews was at the match and offered to take three of the tour party with him for a round of golf. A R&A club rule required any foursome on the Old Course to include at least one club member, hence the limit of only three USCS tour party players. We drew for who the three would be and because this was so special, we limited the drawing to only players. As coaches, chairmen, and managers usually made up most of the golfing party on other tours, me included, this was a disappointment not to play the Old Course, but one I wasn’t going to pass up. I went along as a caddy and walked the entire Old Course with the three golfers. The Old Course, however, is one of only several courses at the R&A, although the most famous. While I gave up a round of playing golf to be on the Old Course, Merideth, Sands, and the rest who wanted to play played on the St. Andrews course which paralleled the sea shore.
