Pre/post 95RAF match stories
A couple of anecdotes about the match. A night or two before the match, the team went into Austin for a night on the town. We were billeted at Bergstrom AFB, about ten miles outside of Austin. John Pooler, a young Marine, lance corporal I believe, missed his ride back to base and wound up running the whole way home.
We didn’t have a place to host the RAF at an after match dinner, so Pat O’Connor and I wrangled getting a big barbeque grill some place and we barbequed brisket and made tacos for an outdoor party post-match.
Denny Merideth had to leave the match at half time to catch a flight ‘home’ to Saudi Arabia where he was stationed at the time. He had received a message shortly before the match that he and his family who at the time were still back in Saudi Arabia had been targeted by Islamic terrorists. Denny was on his way home to back up his family and PCS out of Saudi Arabia.
