Leadership

From Coach Meteer: "In mid-August 1987 USAF Col. Dick Battock somehow tracked me down at my in-laws’ house in Maryland. I and my family had just returned from 2 1/2 years in Saudi Arabia and Dick wanted me to try to organize a Navy team for the inter-service championships, which were to be held Labor Day weekend at Fort McNair in DC. I had not yet even reported to my new duty station (Naval ROTC, Maine Maritime Academy). Once I agreed Dick notified Navy players with whom he had contact and I tracked down some of the guys I had coached at USNA from ’79-’81 and we formed a team. We lived and trained at Andrews AFB that year and the next. "

Coach Meteer continued to coach the Navy select side from ’87-’90 and at some point during that period, the navy declaree rugby an official sport, which allowed some funding to take place for traveling players. Dewey Meteer was appointed Director of Navy Rugby, a title which meant only that he was the central point of contact for guys wishing to participate in inter-service rugby.
