Sierra Vista's rugby team was founded in 1980 by Joe Stranger and John Fredic, both officers assigned to the Intelligence Center and School at Fort Huachuca. They joined with AF Officer Rick Coleman, and named the club Cerberus after the mythological three headed dog of Hades. The club became a member of the Arizona Rugby Union and although the first two seasons were not a success in the win column, the club established a reputation for enthusiastic play and good sportsmanship, both during and after the match.

In 1982 the club acquired a new coach, Fred Felix, and under his tutelage began to field a more organized and competitive side. Renamed the Desert Legion in 1983, that landmark year also saw the club reap the fruits of victory with its first league championship as well as a military division championship in the annual Michelob Continental Tournament in Tucson.
