Little Rock AFB Rugby Football Club
NOTE: (Put Logo Here) Started by AF Captain Sean Edris in the fall of 1974. He and several of his AF mates created the team and played against the Little Rock team (River City RC) that was started by John Young. The only other close team that season was U of Arkansas, (Fayettville). The league expanded the next year, adding a relatively well known team in Memphis called Old #7, with Jack Daniels as their sponsor (infamous after game parties). In '75 and '76 two Oklahoma teams were added to the conference, U of O and OSU. Added the team in Topeka and in '76, and set up the first Little Rock tournament...which is still going today (2017)! In 1976 they created the Ozark RFU, joined with Eastern Rockies, Kansas, Missouri and Texas to form the Western RFU. Sean was the first (unofficial) President (allegedly because he wrote the Constitution). Along with the organizational structure, they created the first Western Select Side and called them the Mustangs. Milt Bennett was the first captain, and Bobby Arnold got selected to the first team as well. Also that year found the London Welsh on tour in the US and they played the Mustangs in the first year of their existence. The famous JPR Williams was the London Welsh captain and we think the game was held in North Dallas (77?). It was a tough match, well contested by an upstart new Union select side, and the Americans acquitted ourselves well.
Twin City RFC was created from what was left of LRAFB and local teams in about 1982. From 82-88 there were only 6 -8 players on Twin City RFC (now LRRFC) that were AF. In 87, 88 we hosted RAF UpAvon RFC. The team is now called the Old Grey Slime after combining in the late 1990s with the Little Rock team. They are still playing.
