Camp Lejeune Rugby Football Club
The Camp Lejeune Rugby Football Club was founded in 1973 by a Royal Marine exchange officer, Duncan Christie-Miller, with the help of local marines, Tom Shwver (JAG officer) and Wheels Wheeler who 6 months later help found the New River RFC. Originally called the Lions, they played Duke, New River and the USN team out of Norfolk in that first season. Not much is known of those first few years.
In 1984 the team was reconstistuted as the Camp Lejeune Misfits. Originally New River Air Station had it's own team but was merged with Lejeune as a result of low turnout. The Misfits wear one red and one black sock as a symbol of both club merger. Red and black are also the club's colors. Lejeune plays clubs from all over the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia. Many of the clubs members go on to play at the collegiate level, for the Marine Corps Old Breed and for the All-Marine Rugby Team.
In August 2016 a women's team was founded by spouses and friends of players on the Misfits. Both teams play in the Carolinas Geographical Union and start their seasons at the end of May with 7s which lasts until the end of the summer followed by the 15s season which spans the fall and spring of the following year. An annual awards ceremony is conducted at the end of every calendar year in December before the teams go on holiday break. The club currently hosts the "Go Ruck Yourself" Winter Classic Tournament on President's Day Weekend with its inaugural in 2015. Starting in August 2017, after taking the reigns from the defunct Cherry Point team, Lejeune will host the Blackbeard 7s Beach Rugby Tournament in Atlantic Beach, NC.
2020, Summer. Camp Lejeune Misfits has moved off base and has started over as the Onslow Rugby Club Misfits. The preponderance of the team are from Base but the new structure will set up a more competitive and well coached environment for future All Marine Ruggers.
